Default Another Kind of Gas Problem

Concord Monitor - Another kind of gas problem

Quote:
It may be a small country on the edge of the world, but New Zealand has big ambitions in the fight against climate change. Last year, Prime Minister Helen Clark set a national goal of becoming the world's first carbon-neutral country.

Livestock farmers, long among the country's major export earners, are worried. They say the cost of fighting greenhouse gases could drive many of them into bankruptcy, and they feel they're being singled out because New Zealand has relatively few big industrial polluters.

Five years ago, farmers revolted to defeat a plan to levy a tax on each head of cattle, sheep, goat and deer to fund research on controlling their gas emissions. The anger is building again, this time against a proposal to make the farmers the world's first forced to pay if they exceed government-imposed limits on greenhouse gases.
If it goes ahead, the plan could slash New Zealand farmers' profits by half over the next five years, driving big exporters out of business in the middle of a global food crisis, Pedersen warned.

A team of New Zealand scientists, backed by millions of dollars from the farm industry and the government, are conducting world-leading research into possible solutions, including genetic engineering, cloning and a vaccine for gassy animals.
....a global food crisis that environmentalists and the UN have helped cause. And one that will only get worse if temperatures continue to drop.

So now we've stooped to attempting to genetically engineer animals to stop farting in order to prevent a problem that isn't even a problem. We're (or New Zealand for now, at least) attempting to punish farmers when we need more food. We block all attempts to drill for our own oil yet constantly bitch about our dependence on foreign oil.

This whole thing is backwards. And to add to the backwardness, we've obsessed with the farts of animals to the point that we're trying to "engineer" them to not fart.

Can we "engineer" a new brain for humans? I can't believe it's come to this.

You know what is around the corner ? a carbon tax on humans breathing, as we emit co2 as we breath out.

Yep, all very good points, there is a food crisis right now, and they want to limit the amount of food being produced, makes a lot of sense to me. If they are so concerned about animals farting, what about humans ? I'd be the first to be driven to bankruptcy if they ever instituted a methane tax.

btw, I'm just thinking aloud here, isn't preventing an animal not to fart animal cruelty ? where is peta on this issue ? You know how painful it is when you gotta let one go but can't (social taboo), imagine how painful it must feel for an animal not being allowed to fart ? Animal cruelty for sure.

I hadn't thought of that. One would think so. I find the passing of gas to be quite relieving, myself.

As much as they complain about mice & rats used in experiments, if they were consistent they would be all over this.....but as I've mentioned before, their real goal is control over the world's food supply, so they're not about to object to experiments on cows.

They hate cows, but helpless rats must be defended. Whatever.

I saw where PETA was recently at the Southern Baptist Convention promoting the vegan lifestyle. Exercise in futility. Yet Reuters made sure to give them some free publicity.

one of the big reasons why i despise peta, it is fine if they want to eat rabbit food, but come on, quit trying to ram your stupid ideas down other people's throats.

If I want a salad, i'll eat one, but if i want a steak, that is my choice too. The last thing I want is some preachy birkenstock wearing non showering hippies telling me what i can and cannot eat.

I firmly believe if a person wants to eat rabbit food for the rest of their lives, then it should be their choice. Fine. but don't shove that sh.it down my throat.

BTW, cooked up 2 nice juicy steaks yesterday for dinner, man oh man, was it good ! Threw them on the bbq and cooked them til it was medium rare. So take that peta !!!!
