Default Downloading: The Green Way to Pay

I just posted on several states’ new taxes on internet downloads. Over at TLF, tech liberator Braden Cox just published an interesting piece on the green benefits of downloading. Apparently, downloading uses less than half the resources of brick-and-mortar purchases. And states want to tax it into oblivion. addthis_url = 'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.openmarket.org%2F2008%2F08%2F12% 2Fdownloading-the-green-way-to-pay%2F'; [...]

States may tax iTunes, other digital downloads | The Iconoclast - politics, law, and technology - CNET News.com

Quote:
With retail e-commerce sales now estimated to exceed $130 billion a year, and iTunes song purchases topping 5 billion, state politicians and tax collectors have begun to levy new fees on digital downloads.

Call it the iTax. In 2008 alone, at least nine states have considered digital download taxes, and at least five of those states have enacted them into law. Nebraska's governor signed a digital download tax bill into law in April, and a similar measure was adopted in Tennessee in June. As CNET News reported a few months ago, Indiana, South Dakota, and Utah also enacted digital download taxes this year. (more)

i've always lived by this philosophy, if the gov't can find a way/reason to tax its people, it will.

whether it is income tax, carbon tax, cap and trade, and now itunes tax, it is all the same, more money into the gov't coffers.
