Default ecofreaks : john berlau

I am currently reading this book by Berlau. If you go to the home page of this website, on the right hand side there is a box with a list of books that are recommended reading, so I thought to myself : being frugal, and working at a University, I thought "12 floor library it has to contain a few of those titles".

So I checked, and sure enough, they do have some titles listed. I decided to pick ecofreak and read it.

So far, I'm only half way thru chapter 1, but what I've read so far I've been very impressed. It is well written, provides alot of FACTS (listen up environmentalists, FACTS, not LIES), and how environmentalism has harmed mankind.

In Chapter 1, it discusses the DDT ban, and he gave alot of examples of how safe DDT really is, in fact the people he interviewed most are still alive today ! One of the creators of DDT (jacob joseph ?) did die though, at an early age he was practically buried in DDT. He lived to a nice age of over 80, and it wasn't DDT that killed him, it was old age.

He provides how DDT saved millions in world war 2, not just US soldiers but holocaust survivors as well. Millions have been saved from typhus (a disease carried from lice), and saved millions from malaria. It also has saved alot of trees, from the deadly bark beetle (dutch elm disease). He even gave an example of where spraying of DDT stopped for one year (yep, an environmentalist prevented the DDT spraying) and all elm trees didn't survive the beetle invasion. Spraying with DDT, only one tree was lost.

The author discusses what AE has termed quite well, environmentalists = obstructionist to progress. He also starts off by stating that environmentalist use one tool to get their message across, and that is fear (we've discussed that tactic on this forum many times). Environmentalists don't use facts, they don't do any research, but they use fear to get people to listen and obey.

I've only gotten to the part where Rachel Carson comes into the picture (that is tonite's reading ), but if you're not familiar, Carson is the nut case that banned DDT. In fact, no one has died from DDT at all, despite it being used heavily in WW2, yet peniccilin, people have died from it (allergic reaction) and yet peniccilin is touted as a life saving drug. Go figure.

Oh, the author also gives an excellent example of how environmentalists contributed to the destruction of New Orleans and Katrina. It was a fact that when Katrina hit land, it was not a hurricane but a powerful storm. Reason why the city got flooded was the lack of damns/floodgates/levees, and you know who prevented the construction of such items ? environmentalists. I feel to divert attention to their boondoggle, environmentalists quickly blamed katrina on global warming. Shrewd eh ?

I read Ecofreaks last year while on vacation, and I thought it was a great read. It's one of several books I've read that give a great overall perspective about what environmentalism is all about and how their "good intentions" have led to disastrous consequences -- most of which have been negligently ignored by most mainstream media outlets.

I may be wrong, but I think Berlau even called into question the "good intentions" with some direct quotes from environmentalists who advocated population control, and weren't ashamed to admit it. I may be thinking of another book, as my brain has since been clogged with tax laws and audit procedures. If that's in this book, be sure to share it here. Can't remember where I read those quotes, but I sure remember my reaction.

After I take my 2nd part of the CPA exam next week, I'll have a few weeks to settle in to Iain Murray's The Real Inconvenient Truths, which exposes a lot of these "good intentions" as well.

I have the book until sept 11 (unless a damn student recalls it), so that gives me lots of time to read it.

Berlau did mention the 'good intentions' of environmentalists, so far nothing about population control but it had to do with wetlands. Berlau said something like environmentalists advocate wetlands to save a few species, however their good intentions spawn floods that destroy valuable land, homes, ...

Right now, everything he has said about DDT is bang on to what I've learned about DDT, yet he added even more examples of DDT that I never thought of (dutch elm disease). I don't know if I can stomach the bit about rachel carson, because the damn b*tch banned a helpful tool against the fight against insect born disease based on skewed data. but yeah, Berlau's book is very insightful, and you're right, you think main media will discuss it ? I have a better chance of winning the big jackpot in a lottery.

Oh, he did mention something about asbestos, and how it is by far the best fire retardant known to man.

hey AE, I've gotten further into the book and Berlau states many times how environmentalists are for population control (ie. ban on DDT).

Berlau's book is a real eye opener, it is a shame that books like his are lost in the sea of pro environment books and literature.

I'm surprised the library had it. Must've slipped through the cracks.

I thought it might have been his book that talked about population control. Some of these books are real eye-openers, you're right. When the bigger picture starts coming together, it's amazing that more people don't see what's really going on.
