Default Another Eulogy for a Block of Ice

Every time a block of ice melts, it's like the end of the world or something. Watch the mainstream press jump all over this story in the next few days.

New crack fractures major glacier in north Greenland | World | Chron.com - Houston Chronicle

Quote:
In northern Greenland, a part of the Arctic that had seemed immune from global warming, new satellite images show a growing giant crack and an 11-square-mile chunk of ice hemorrhaging off a major glacier, scientists said Thursday.

And that's led the university professor who spotted the wounds in the massive Petermann glacier to predict disintegration of a major portion of the Northern Hemisphere's largest floating glacier within the year.

If it does worsen and other northern Greenland glaciers melt faster, then it could speed up sea level rise, already increasing because of melt in sourthern Greenland.
Wounds? Hemorrhaging? Here we go again.

The last time a block of ice melted, the article read more like a eulogy. I guess this is common practice now for emotional appeal.

maybe next time i grab an ice cube from the freezer, and it melts in my drink, i should call the media and declare global warming too.

hmmm, 11 square miles, and how large is the arctic ? I'm sure it is alot larger than 11 square miles. That only represents a very small fraction of the arctic. But yeah, the media will be all over this and pressing that panic button like there is no tomorrow.

This is good news for any of those with Norse blood running through their veins. All those land deeds they hold dating back 1000 years now might actually be worth something. In the near future we could see cattle once again grazing on the plains of Greenland, great news for those of us who enjoy a good steak or burger.
