World Climate Report Increasing Intense Storms?

Quote:
One claim from the global warming advocates we hear over and over is that severe storms are increasing in frequency and intensity. If pressed on this matter, they will concede that considerable debate surrounds trends or model predictions for hurricanes or tornados, but they insist that intense precipitation has definitely been increasing thanks to global warming. To buttress their arguments, they will point out that the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) states in their most recent summary that “The frequency of heavy precipitation events has increased over most land areas, consistent with warming and observed increases of atmospheric water vapour.” Furthermore, IPCC states that the observed trend over the most recent five decades is “likely,” that the trend is caused in some part by humans is “more likely than not,” and that the trend will continue this century is “very likely.”

We have covered this topic many times in the past, and finding an increase in heavy precipitation is like finding a ghost. It shows up in some regions, not others. The same time series of precipitation can reveal the signal using one set of defensible analyses, but it disappears using some other equally defensible statistical techniques. Nonetheless, the global warming crusaders are quick to blame any unusual heavy precipitation event on the build up of greenhouse gases, and they are very good about garnering press coverage to highlight their point of view. I've told people about this for years. A warmer climate means more precipitation, not less. Precipitation is good since it increases the supply of potable water. No need for desalinization, the planet does it for us. All we need to do is increase our storage capacity in order to use this water. When the planet cools, such as in an ice age, there is actually less precipitation. Colder air is drier than warmer air, it simply cannot hold as much water as warmer air. People who live in four season areas typically notice that their skin is drier during the winter months. That is because the air is drier. In an ice age more water is locked up (read: unusable) as ice. This is bad. It's pretty hard to grow crops when there is little water available, and when you compound that with a shorter growing season that comes from cooler world temperatures and you will be seeing worldwide famine and war. Basically, an ice age is a worldwide drought.

Some people think the polar ice caps will disappear when the planet warms. It won't disappear but it's overall area will change. It's done this many times over the life of the planet, even before humans came around a million years ago. While the overall area of the icecap may diminish, the thickness of the ice cap should increase as you approach the poles due to the increased precipitation.

dennis, you mention "increase our storage capacity in order to use this water."

My first thought is : dams.

they help preserve this commodity right ? Well, unfortunately, the greens don't like dams as it halts the natural movement of rivers. So now, they complain that we should conserve water, and we have the technology to do so, and they hate it. I don't get it. All that water is basically being wasted going into the ocean.

Here in San Diego we are being bombarded with commercials telling us to save water so our children will have some. These spots make it seem that there is a finite source of water on our planet and when we use it up , we're done. Balderdash. Water is recycled naturally every minute of every day in this world. What we need to do is take advantage of the water made available by us by building more reservoirs. Reservoirs are good for the economy. Not only does a stable water supply encourage growth, the site itself can be used for recreation and as a supply of food. Reservoirs allow development of arid regions like here in San Diego County and increase plant life in areas where rainfall is minimal. I've seen pictures of El Cajon (where my business is located) going back less than 100 years. There were hardly any trees in this area because there was no infrastructure around to irrigate the land. Got a lot more trees around here nowadays.

WTF??? So I guess every school in San Diego is teaching this as well.

Man...sometimes I wonder how the hell we can get out of this mess. The lies, propaganda & misinformation are just out of control. And people are actually buying it.
