Default Alabama to tax fat people

Did I call this months ago, or what? Last place I expected it would have been Alabama, though.

There are two groups of people for which discrimination is legal: smokers and the obese. Once they started this with smokers, now they're moving on to the next group.

FOXNews.com - Alabama Plans to Tax Fat Employees to Recoup Insurance Costs - Local News | News Articles | National News | US News

Quote:
Beginning in 2010, Alabama, which has the second highest obesity rate in the country, will start charging all of its employees an extra $25 per month for health insurance. (Currently, single workers pay nothing; family plans cost $180 a month.)

But there's a way to avoid the fee: Get a check-up at an in-office "wellness center," where nurses will check for diabetes and hypertension and measure blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose levels and Body Mass Index (BMI). (more)

I remember someone posting something about japan doing something similiar.

not sure what to make of this, depending on a person's stress in life they may not have time to exercise (ie. single parent). I think a better way of handling this would be to reward those that do make an effort to remain healthy but those that choose not to do so, don't penalize them either. As the article said, it could easily stigmatize them.

Next thing you know, they'll be claiming that meat causes obesity.

I feel like grilling something.

to me, there could be many factors contributing to someone being 'obese'.

One thing I am pretty certain of, if gov't didn't put soo much money towards the environment, there would be plenty of money (and change) towards programs into helping people become more aware of their bodies and lives.
